Nursing uniforms have come a long way since the traditional dress and cap of the late 1800’s. Now we have a variety of styles, colors and even fabrics to choose from. The most popular fabric is a polyester cotton blend. A vast majority of scrubs are made with these two materials. They both have qualities that are needed in the medical industry: strength and comfort.

Cotton is a soft comfortable material. It also can absorb moisture easily which can help keep your skin dry. Polyester on the other hand is extremely durable material and it is stretchy which is great since nurses have to be able to move quickly and sometimes in odd ways to get the job done! Scrub manufacturers have played around with different ratios of both these materials for optimal scrubs. The standard is 65% Cotton/ 35% Polyester. I have been a pediatric nurse for just about thirty years. I have seen all the changes to the nurse’s uniform and I have tried my fair share of different kinds of scrubs.
