At first it was just because you were lazy. After a long day at work you just didn’t feel like getting off the couch and changing out of your scrubs. After all, why bother? You’re at home. Relaxing. And then there was that time you had to run a couple errands and didn’t feel like changing. No biggie. But then came that time when the thought first struck you...

...that your old navy scrub pants would look really cute with those new sandals, a white t-shirt and that grey cardigan...

You’re not alone if you’ve entertained the idea of wearing your scrubs outside of work. It’s definitely not a bad idea! And when it comes to fashion and function there are about a zillion different ways to make these versatile bad boys work for you. Not sure where to get started? Take a look at these 10 ways to wear scrubs outside of work:

1. Pair an over-sized scrub top with leggings and sandals for a comfy-chic spring look.
2. Wear a scrub jacket (like Medline | Scrub Jackets | Angelstat Unisex) unbuttoned over a summer dress or tank top and jeans.
3. Layer a bold colored short-sleeved scrub top with a neutral long-sleeved t-shirt underneath. Pair with jeans for an easy-going Saturday look.
4. Wear your old scrubs when doing household chores such as washing the car, gardening, or bathing the dog.
5. Add a wide belt to a scrub dress (such as Medline | Scrub Dresses & Skirts | Angelstat Step In Scrub Dress) and throw on some ballet flats.
6. Use elastic waisted scrub pants as transition clothes between maternity apparel and your regular jeans.
7. Try wearing wide-legged scrub pants with a fitted top, bold statement jewelry, and moccasins.
8. Use your old white lab coats as painting smocks.
9. Pair a festive print tunic scrub top with a cardigan and shorts.
10. Utilize your comfiest pair of scrubs as jammies! Just add fuzzy slippers and a Snuggie.

nursing_symbol_earrings

It’s a grey area in nursing attire standards. Whereas most medical professionals must adhere to a universal scrubs dress code, the regulations for allowable jewelry vary. Hospitals and other medical facilities often have different guidelines for the types and sizes of jewelry that can be worn by on-duty scrub-wearers. And it’s not just young and inexperienced nurses that are pushing the boundaries of acceptable on-the-clock bling. Lately, older and more experienced nurses often wear large and flashy pieces of jewelry at work. So what gives? How much jewelry is too much?

Check out these interesting facts before you make your own final decision:

• Some medical institutions allow small hoop earrings, simple chain necklaces, wedding and engagement rings, and watches.

• Other medical institutions allow only stud earrings and wedding bands.

• Many medical institutions base the decision to exclude numerous pieces of jewelry off of the fact that each piece can hold bacteria. (Go ahead. Clean your watch or favorite necklace. You might be surprised at how much grime comes off!)

• Large pieces of jewelry, including some styles of engagement rings, can catch on objects, clothing, or even on a patient’s hair or skin.

• Many nurses cite religious and personal reasons for not wanting to remove certain pieces of jewelry while on the job (such as wedding bands, or cross necklaces). Other nurses cite the desire and right to express themselves freely (through clothing, jewelry, etc...) while on the job.

• On the other hand, numerous nurses opt for a “less is more” approach when it comes to wearing jewelry. They believe that taking off a potentially dirty (and dangerous) engagement ring for work does not mean they are in any way less committed to their fiance. And removing heavy or distracting religious necklaces does not mean they are less devout in their faith.

So what do you think? How much jewelry is too much? Comment and share your opinion!

staycation

I’ve got the Spring Break blues, baby. Last year it was the gorgeous beaches of South Carolina that broke up the monotony of March’s gloomy weather. This year... well, I’m stuck at home (and although I truly like the paint color on the walls of my house, it’s not exactly a great substitute for blue skies and sunshine).

If you’re like me, your 2011 Spring Break plans probably won’t involve any beaches, cruises, or relaxing spa getaways. Be it lack of finances or lack of time, vacation plans are on hold and you’re staying put.

But before you pout your way through everybody else’s Spring Break week consider these refreshing staycation ideas:

1. Go hiking. Find the nearest state park, nature preserve, or arboretum.

2. Head to the a local library. Check out that book you’ve been meaning to read. Don’t forget to investigate the DVD selection, books on CD, and music selection.

3. Host a get-together for all your staycationer friends. Throw a cocktail party or order pizza!

4. Get out the old board games or video games. Play some Monopoly or Mario Kart (and show your kids who’s boss).

5. Get together with your friends and have an at-home spa night. Have everyone bring some nail polish, facial masks, and favorite type of ice cream or candy.

6. Try a new recipe. Consider challenging your significant other or some friends to a “sauce” competition. Make one batch of pasta and as many different types of sauce as you like. Vote to decide whose sauce wins.

7. Go see a local theatre performance or music event. You might be surprised at the talent your city or town has to offer!

8. Plan a culturally themed movie night. Make your own sushi and watch some Japanese martial arts films. Order some Indian food and rent a Bollywood movie.

9. Get a head start on your garden. Try growing fresh herbs on your windowsill. Purchase some bright potted flowers for your front step.

10. Get creative. Try painting to music. Write a poem for fun. Practice playing guitar again. Make a photo collage. Focus on having fun instead of perfection!

While you’re kicking back at home go ahead and treat yourself to a new pair of scrubs. Check out Scrubs123 for a wide array of Scrub Uniforms, Medical Scrubs, & Nursing Scrubs. Follow Scrubs123.com on Twitter and you’ll receive exclusive info on giveaways and discounts!

Combat Allergies

Spring is in the air! And by “Spring” we really mean pollen. It’s the kickoff of the annual sneezing, itchy eyes, and runny nose season. The season that plagues allergy sufferers like... well, the plague. And those of us that are brave enough to do spring cleaning or own pets are faced with even more trauma. Ugh.

Although we haven’t found a cure-all for spring allergies, we have compiled some excellent tips for combating allergies... even before they start! Read on to learn how (haven’t you bought enough Kleenex for one year?):

1. Leave your shoes in the garage when you get home (they may have pollen on them).

2. Vacuum regularly (hey it’s a good arm workout!).

3. Change the bedsheets once a week (again... a good arm workout).

4. Shower up. Regular washing will get rid of any pollen that may have gotten stuck in your hair or on your body during the day.

5. Budget for air-conditioning and keep the windows shut!

6. Try not to be outside between 2:00pm and 4:00pm. This time frame is when pollen is at its peak. Also, stay inside during especially windy days and wear sunglasses (to keep pollen out of your eyes) whenever you do go outside.

7. Switch to feather pillows. The fabric on feather pillow casing is of a denser weave and thus keeps dust mites out.

8. Budget for a clothes dryer. Drying your clothes outside can cause them to become covered in pollen.

9. Change the air filters in your home.

10. Have your home checked for mold. Take necessary measures to keep your home dry and well-ventilated. (Tip: top the soil of your indoor potted plants with pebbles and don’t over water. This will discourage mold growth.)

Bonus Tip for Parents: Even if you have pet allergies don’t dissuade your children from playing with the neighbor’s dog. Studies show that children who are frequently around animals are less likely to develop pet allergies than children who are never around animals.

Men's ScrubsLet’s be honest. We men don’t really care to wear floral and shamrock print scrubs on Saint Paddy’s day. Nor are we planning to dig up some checkered daisy scrubs for the spring. We might (key word being “might”) wear blue or red sometime during the 4th of July week. But that’s only if our red or blue scrubs are clean and they happen to be at the top of the laundry pile. So if you’re tired of weeding through seasonal prints and paisley swirls then look no further. We’ve sifted through the best scrubs and gathered some of the top designs for men (all completely swirls and floral-free)..

Cherokee | Scrub Tops | Men's Zip Front Short Sleeved Jacket

Cherokee_Scrubs_Men

Scrubs for Spring!

Scrubs Spring

Wearing scrubs day after day can be a challenge. Especially if you’re longing to update your look or embrace some of the spring fashion trends! This year, don’t settle for mundane. It’s time to get creative and rock those scrubs! Check out these tips and tricks:

  • Get some new scrubs in one of this season’s hottest colors: shades of rust, beige tones, bright blues, pinks, and citrus colors.
  • Mix and match your scrub prints. Spring runways have been full of mix-and-match prints. The key is to choose prints that have a small design (rather than big and bold prints) and to pair prints that are within the same color family.
  • Update your hairstyle. Blunt bangs, a wavy bob, or a pixie cut are all fashionable ways to update your locks!
  • Add small statement jewelry. Look for items with tassels, fringe, or polished stones. If you want something simpler, check out the minimalistic gold and silver pieces that have been hitting stores. Also popular this season are pieces done in rose-gold (it’s the perfect love-child of silver and gold!).
  • Embrace your roomy scrub pants! This year it’s all about alternatives to the skinny jean. From flares to wide-legged styles, women’s pants are becoming more relaxed and less constricting.
  • Get some preppy accessories. Ladylike stripes, loafers, and watches are the the latest in fashion trends. Get out that watch you stopped wearing and pick up a new tote to take to work!
  • Try some simple style trends for your days off work. This Spring it’s time to pay homage to the 60s and 70s. Try a print shift dress or a bright maxi-dress for comfy and effortless style. Also in vogue - military fashion trends. Try pairing a military jacket with a feminine skirt or jeans.

Spring Cleaning ScrubsHave you written up your spring cleaning list yet? No? Well, the snow is melting, the stores are stocked with Easter eggs, and Spring’s official kick-off date is fast approaching! The start of warm weather is the perfect opportunity to clean out all the dust and junk that’s accumulated in your house over the winter. But it’s also the perfect opportunity to do some more personal cleaning. Is your mood feeling a little dusty? Or maybe your brain feels a little cluttered? Read on for some fabulous tips on how to spring clean your life:

1. Plan some time to reevaluate and refresh your relationship with your significant other. Consider what you love about the relationship and what needs work. Be sure to voice any frustrations or concerns you have, but don’t forget to praise your partner for what he or she does well. (Tip: Has it been a while since you’ve gotten away with your honey? Plan a weekend getaway without the kids!)

2. Evaluate your friendships and social engagements. Are they draining or encouraging? If someone continually drags you down then there’s nothing wrong with cutting back on time with that person.

3. Let go of bitterness. What are the top things in your life that continue to irk you (even if they happened years ago)? So something made you unhappy - it’s only natural to feel hurt! But don’t let past grievances continue to steal your joy. It’s time to let it go!

4. Clean out your email... and phone... and Facebook account... When’s the last time you emptied your inbox? Or deleted unnecessary “friends”? Take some time and freshen up your accounts and de-clutter your contacts.

5. Make room for happiness. Look at your calendar. Do you have any fun activities scheduled? Think like a kid and make it a priority to do something you love! Make some room to relax and cut loose.

Do yourself a favor and put “Purge worn-out scrubs!” on your spring cleaning list. When it’s time to buy new scrubs check out Scrubs123 for a vast selection of Scrub Uniforms, Medical Scrubs, & Nursing Scrubs. Famiy VacationHave you made spring break plans yet? Maybe you’re not sure if you can fit it into your busy schedule or afford to take the time off. But before you skip a 2011 spring break vacation, make sure to consider these fabulous, relaxing, and cost-efficient hot spots!

Captiva Island, Florida. Tucked away in Florida’s Gulf Coast, Captiva Island offers a relaxing oasis amidst the madness of Florida’s overcrowded spring break beaches. Sailing, shell-collecting along the pristine beaches, and kayaking are all part of Captiva’s peaceful atmosphere.

Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Tired of the same ol’ beach routine? Head to Steamboat for family-friendly skiing, sleigh-rides, and a soak in the natural hot springs. Plus the views are gorgeous!

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. It’s America’s water playground and both indoor and outdoor water parks abound. Many of the hotels and resorts offer discounted accommodation packages in conjunction with water park passes.

Snugglers Notch, Vermont. With a name like “Snugglers” you can’t go wrong! Skiing, snowboarding, dog-sledding, ice-skating, indoor swimming, and art classes are all available.

Wickenburg, Arizona. Make 2011’s spring break vacation memorable and head to Rancho de los Caballeros in Wickenburg. In typical dude ranch style, you can enjoy horseback riding, trail hiking, golf, swimming, and campfires!

Remember, if you want to avoid collegiate spring break madness then steer clear of the most popular hot spots (like Panama City, Florida; South Beach in Miami, Florida; Lake Havasu City, Arizona; and South Padre Island, Texas). If you have some extra cash, consider venturing out of the states. Europe, Canada, and the Caribbean are all known for offering relaxing and uncrowded getaways.
