Tips for New Years Resolutions

We all know how it goes. December 31st rolls around and suddenly we feel this urge to change our lifestyle and become better people. We want to change our world, our bodies, our relationships, our jobs, our hobbies, and our budgets. Lofty ideas and notions fill our heads and New Year’s resolutions are quickly made (and, quite frankly, quickly forgotten).

Surely, we think, there must be some better way. Some way to strive towards goals AND achieve them.

Behold, the best tips and tricks for creating attainable and achieveable New Year’s resolutions:

  • Be honest with yourself. Are you really going to read War & Peace on your summer vacation? Are you really going to quit eating all sweets for 12 months? One of the primary reasons that people fail to keep resolutions is because their initial goals are too lofty. Being realistic can help even the playing field.
  • Less is more. Keep your New Year’s resolution list short and you will have more time and energy to focus on the goals that make the cut. Lengthy lists of resolutions will spread you too thin and you’ll wear out from trying to achieve everything. Choose a maximum of three challenging goals. If you want to add additional goals then only add ones that are super simple and achievable.
  • Think of the steps you will need to take.  Exactly how are you going to reach your goal? What milestones must you reach before you achieve your resolution? Write down a step-by-step list of sub-goals for your main goal. Tip: brainstorm ideas for rewarding yourself every time you reach a sub-goal!

Scrubs123 has Nurse’s Uniforms, Medical Scrubs & Nursing Scrubs for all New Year’s resolution-makers (go ahead and add “I resolve to update my scrubs wardrobe” to the list). If you haven’t already, make sure to follow Scrubs123.com on Twitter!

Christmas has come and gone and the new year is on it’s way. The holidays can be fun, but they often leave us feeling completely exhausted. The parties, shopping, savory foods and sweets, numerous social engagements, and cold weather can all add up to one very tired, very drained individual.

How To De-Stress

Not much can be done to change the fact that the holidays are stressful. There are, however, some great ways to de-stress after all the merry-making is over. Plan on one of these top 5 methods of de-stressing and your new year will be much more relaxed:
•    Take care of your body. Feed it plenty of fruits and veggies. Exercise. Go to bed early. Healing yourself physically will renew you - body, mind, and spirit.

•    Schedule time for yourself. For real. Make an appointment on your calendar and don’t break it. Give yourself several hours of TLC. It can be anything that relaxes you and that you enjoy. Go get a massage. Rent your favorite movie. Take a long walk with your pooch. Do a puzzle. Give yourself the gift of time and you will regain your focus.
•    Be okay with imperfection. The house doesn’t have to be spotless. It’s okay that you forgot to send your cousin a Christmas card. So what if the holiday casserole burned. Dwelling on past mistakes will only make you feel guilty and overwhelmed.

•    Get organized. Take some time to clean out your car or reorganize your closet. Go through that stack of papers at your desk. By doing so, you’ll feel better prepared for whatever life throws at you.

•    Treat yourself. There’s nothing wrong with getting yourself a little holiday gift. Didn’t get what you wanted for Christmas? Go out and get (it’s probably on sale by now). Are your work clothes a little out of date? Update your wardrobe (check out Scrubs123’s patterned collection of Scrub Tops, Scrub Bottoms & Scrub Jackets).

So even though the holidays may wipe you out, rest assured that you can and will bounce back. 2011 is a brand new year. Here’s to a relaxed and de-stressed you!

Tips for Sore Feet

sore feet

Being on your feet all day is a pain. Literally. You know how it is - the pressure in your heels and insteps starts to build,  your ankles begin to swell, and maybe even numbness starts to set in to your toes.

Ouch.

Yes, your job is demanding and being on your feet all day is just part of the gig. There’s no getting around it. However, there are several ways that you can lessen your tootsies aches and pains. Check out these tips and tricks for preventing and treating sore feet:

Stretch and massage. Make a habit of massaging and stretching your feet each night. Lay in bed and circle your foot (ankle rotations) or give your soles a rub down. Tip: Fill an old plastic water bottle three quarters of the way full and freeze it. Set it on the ground, take off your shoes, and roll it back and forth on the floor with the bottom of your foot. This helps to limber up the foot AND gives it a nice little massage. Plus, the coldness will help to ease any swelling.

Wear the right shoes. Can you wiggle your toes inside your shoes? No? Then they are too narrow or too small. Do the arches of your feet ache by the end of your shift? Yes? Then your shoes don’t have enough arch support. The right pair of shoes can make all the difference. Choose a shoe that is lightweight yet supportive, breathable, and with plenty of toe room (check out Oxypas Footware & Socks Ultralite Clog with Adjustable Heel Strap).

Pay attention to your feet. You only have one pair! If you notice an increase in every day pain then don’t just chalk it up to working long hours. See a podiatrist.

Whether you’re new to the scrub-wearing game or a veteran at donning the duds, at some point you’ll face that harrowing question - “How many scrubs does a person really need?” 2? 5? 25?

The answer is: it depends. So before you throw out your 30 year collection of scrubs (or run to the nearest store and buy 12 more pairs), check out these tips and tricks for determining just how many scrubs you really need:

First, make sure you know your employer’s policies on scrub cuts, colors, and patterns. Does your employer use color coding to distinguish between departments? Are patterned scrubs allowed? You don’t want to run out and buy your favorite Mickey Mouse scrubs and then find out your employer only allows solid colors. Check the rule book before updating your wardrobe.

Compare your laundry schedule and work schedule. It’s true, some of us only do laundry every other week. Others like to throw in a load every other night. Think realistically about how often you do laundry and whether or not you care about having freshly washed scrubs every single time you work. (Tip: if you regularly pick up extra shifts you should keep an extra pair of scrubs on hand so that you’re not scrambling to find a clean pair at the last minute.)

Look for wear and tear. How tough are you on your scrubs? Just because you think you have enough scrubs doesn’t mean it’s not time to retire some of the old ones. Do at least an annual check on your scrubs to determine which ones to keep and which ones to toss.

Check the weather. Do you live in a cold climate state? You may want to invest in some long-sleeved scrub jackets (such as Landau Scrub Jackets Crew Neck Warm-up Jacket) for the winter months. This means you’ll need both short-sleeved and long-sleeved scrubs. If you live in a warm-weather state you are more likely to get through the winter with the same short-sleeved scrubs that you wear in the summer (though you may want to layer a tank or long-sleeved t-shirt if it gets a little cool).

Consider your own personal tastes. If your employer allows you to choose the cut and colors of your scrubs then you have the freedom to express yourself through your work attire. What’s your style? Do you want some with patterns (check out these patterned Scrub Tops, Scrub Bottoms & Scrub Jackets) and some that are solid? Do you want special holiday scrubs? Think about what colors and patterns will most make you feel comfortable and cheerful at work.

So, bottom line - think carefully about your unique needs and tastes before buying (or throwing out) all your scrubs. When it’s time to get some new work apparel Scrubs123 will meet your needs!

How many scrubs you use? Let us know!

Scrubs for Winter

Maybe you’re lucky enough to live in a warm weather state and the idea of winter scrubs has never crossed your mind. Or, maybe you’re like the rest of us and you’re scrambling to garb yourself in attire that is comfortable, professional, and above all warm enough to withstand winter’s bite.

Look no further. Stick to these simple tips and you’ll make it through until Spring:

Layer up. Keep your short-sleeved Summer scrubs in the rotation by pairing them with long sleeved t-shirts underneath. This instantly expands your winter wardrobe and gives you the added benefit of being able to remove layers of clothing if you become too hot.

If just one layer under your scrubs isn’t enough then add a tank top under your clothes. Make sure the tank is snug fitting so that it doesn’t look too bulky under your t-shirt and scrubs. Plus, a snug fitting inner layer helps to trap your body heat and wick away any perspiration moisture.

Invest in a couple scrub jackets, such as a Cherokee Scrub Jackets Cardigan Style Scrub Lab Jacket. Scrub jackets offer the same ease of movement as regular scrub tops plus the warmth of full-length sleeves. Same array of colors and styles - just a bit more sleeve length.

Don’t forget your feet.  Make sure that your shoes are both waterproof and breathable so that outside moisture stays out and any foot perspiration can expire (dry feet = warm feet). Specially designed socks that wick away moisture will also help to keep your toes toasty (check out these Dickies Footwear & Socks Women’s Antimicrobial Socks (3 pair), Charcoal Cheetah).
