We all know how it goes. December 31st rolls around and suddenly we feel this urge to change our lifestyle and become better people. We want to change our world, our bodies, our relationships, our jobs, our hobbies, and our budgets. Lofty ideas and notions fill our heads and New Year’s resolutions are quickly made (and, quite frankly, quickly forgotten).
Surely, we think, there must be some better way. Some way to strive towards goals AND achieve them.
Behold, the best tips and tricks for creating attainable and achieveable New Year’s resolutions:
- Be honest with yourself. Are you really going to read War & Peace on your summer vacation? Are you really going to quit eating all sweets for 12 months? One of the primary reasons that people fail to keep resolutions is because their initial goals are too lofty. Being realistic can help even the playing field.
- Less is more. Keep your New Year’s resolution list short and you will have more time and energy to focus on the goals that make the cut. Lengthy lists of resolutions will spread you too thin and you’ll wear out from trying to achieve everything. Choose a maximum of three challenging goals. If you want to add additional goals then only add ones that are super simple and achievable.
- Think of the steps you will need to take. Exactly how are you going to reach your goal? What milestones must you reach before you achieve your resolution? Write down a step-by-step list of sub-goals for your main goal. Tip: brainstorm ideas for rewarding yourself every time you reach a sub-goal!
